THE RANGE ROVER ELECTRIC IS SET TO HAVE V-8 LEVELS OF POWER AND PERFORMANCE

The newest all-electric Range Rover will be available for pre-order in the new year. With what Jaguar Land Rover claims is a "near-silent" driving experience, the SUV aims to balance its luxury image with adapting the 100 percent electric powertrain for off-roading.

The British-born and bred company insists the model will not fail to wow in power and performance with a powertrain comparable to the gas-powered Range Rover's V-8 nervous system. While the automaker has only just begun prototype testing, some teasers have been revealed as the waitlist opens up. Here is everything that the automaker has revealed about it.

The Range Rover EV Prototypes Are Now Being Tested In Real-world Conditions

Land Rover has released the pictures of the first prototypes of the Range Rover EV. Dressed it all-black attire, these prototypes look very similar to the ICE models, thus staying “true to the Range Rover bloodline”. The automaker is testing them on the frozen lakes of Sweden and also plans to test them in extreme conditions, ranging from -40°C in the Arctic Circle, to +50°C in the Middle Eastern deserts.

Range Rover with electric power – means customary Range Rover luxury, refinement and capability plus near-silent fully electric propulsion; with effortlessly smooth and relaxed journeys. To ensure we leave no stone uncovered, we are well underway with our physical testing and development program, all designed at pushing Range Rover Electric to the extremes to ensure its capability remains unparalleled when it reaches you.”

- Thomas Mueller, Executive Director, Product Engineering, Range Rover

The EV will boast a new traction control system – a first for Range Rover – wherein the wheel slip management task will be directly assigned to each EDU (electric drive control unit), instead of solely basing it on the ABS unit. This, according to the automaker, reduces the torque reaction time from 100 milliseconds to just 1 millisecond.

An 800-Volt Architecture Amps Up Charging Abilities

In a press release detailing the debut of all-electric Range Rover's assets, the EV was said to have an 800-Volt setup that is intended to scale up the charging abilities at public stations. But the power doesn't stop there. The new EV SUV model is said to have the same oomph as a V-8 engine.

The Range Rover Sticks To A Familiar Structure

The Range Rover EV will be built upon Land Rover's bespoke Modular Longitudinal Architecture used in all Land Rover electric and hybrid models. The flexible engineering structure was first established in 2019 and serves as the base to the Range Rover Electric Hybrid, Range Rover Sport Electric Hybrid, the various Range Rover Mild Hybrid models, and Jaguar's hybrid models. The model will be manufactured in the two new state-of-the-art Electric Propulsion Manufacturing Center and a $90 million underbody building that aligns with Land Rover's sustainable design goals.

The advanced and sustainable architecture style brings Land Rover and Jaguar one step closer to the partnership's 2030 deadline for a fleet of vehicles with "pure electric power." In just six years, 60 percent of Land Rovers sold are anticipated to have zero tailpipe powertrains while Jaguar has a loftier goal of 100 percent of sales. By 2039, Jaguar Land Rover is scheduled to reach a carbon-neutral status along with a hydrogen fuel cell program, according to the brand.

The Range Rover's Previous Power Specs

While Land Rover hasn't opened the lid on the new Range Rover EV's technical specifics, the Range Rover name has nearly 55 years of specs to look back on. The latest gas-powered 2024 Range Rover is equipped with 394 ponies paired with 369 pound-feet of torque, according to Land Rover. While the SUV can throw its own 5,240 pounds of weight around, where it really shines is its towing capacity. The 2024 model is confirmed to tow up to 8,200 pounds. It checks out why Land Rover is a crowd favorite.

Range Rover Aims To Create The Quietest Model Yet, Equipped For Any Climate

Despite comparisons to the V-8 Range Rover, the all-electric Rover doesn't share its loud roar. According to Land Rover, the minds behind the new EV set out to invent the quietest SUV yet. Along with initial noise-reduction testing, those same engineers have ensured the stealthy SUV is able to thrive in the most extreme corners of the world.

Surviving -40 To 122 Degrees

Speeding from Sweden to Dubai, the Range Rover EV has been put to the test to withstand the harshest climates. The EV SUV survived -40 all the way to 122 degrees Fahrenheit. With extreme weather and natural disasters plaguing the globe, testing vehicles to ensure they can endure the uncertainty of the climate is a growing necessity.

Additionally, the Range Rover's subzero temperature capabilities meet a demand for electric vehicles that can perform adequately. Cold weather has compromised all-electric vehicles by eating away at their range.

Road Noise Cancellation Makes For A Suburb-Friendly SUV

If a tree falls in the forest does it make a sound? While the answer to that age-old question might be yes, the Range Rover EV makes sure not to disrupt the great outdoors. Besides the powertrain's natural low-noise status, the vehicle takes "silent" to the next level with active road noise cancelation. Sneaking out of the family-friendly neighborhood won't be difficult with the unique feature.

"We are on target to create the quietest and most refined Range Rover ever created," Thomas Müller, Jaguar Land Rover's executive director of product engineering, said. "The magic ingredients that underpin the success of Range Rover remain unchanged: timeless, reductionist design, a serent cabin and go-anywhere capability — but now offered with zero tailpipe emissions."

The Range Rover Electric Builds Upon A History Of Off-Roading Excellence

When the first Range Rover was launched in 1970, it redefined off-roading with a specific large and luxe audience in mind. Sitting at the steep end of the SUV market, the Range Rover bridges the gap between adventure and comfort. Once synonymous with the UK elite's signature tweed and the Royal's weekend countryside outings, the Range Rover keeps its historical image even while expanding to a modern electric motor.

The Rover EV Swims Through Nearly Three Feet Of Water

The Ranger Rover EV doesn't let a little water get in the way of your outdoor adventure. The model speeds through almost three feet of water to safely keep drivers on course. The engineering allowing for such ambitious ventures stems from what Land Rover says is its "most rigorous engineering sign-off" program yet.

Off-Roading In Every Terrain Without Sacrificing Luxury

According to Land Rover, the Range Rover Electric is being tested to confirm the car's ability to traverse every terrain in every condition. The EV is expected to be created with more patents than ever before, meaning that the SUV is set to be more invention than vehicle.

The electric vehicle's innovative streak extends to its interior. While specifics aren't available, the SUV leans on the cutting-edge status that comes with the EV label in its design aesthetic. The Range Rover Electric is all set to be the most "refined" Range Rover yet with "serene modern luxury."

"As repeated throughout history, the Range Rover will continue to set the standard," Müller said. "The first of its type. An electric luxury SUV that can deliver on the Range Rover promise. A true global luxury product, as yet unseen in the industry."
